During his career he had many important assignments that included Team Chief with the 136th Mobil Aerial Port and Superintendent of the 136th Airlift Control Flight.

As Instructor of the Load Planners and Equipment Preparation Course, Chief Shirey has taught more than three thousand students.

His desire to be an example for others to follow was evident in his willingness to volunteer for SOUTHERN WATCH, CORNET OAK, PROVIDE PROMISE, and numerous other National Guard Bureau directed airlift operations.
